Adventure racing returned to the St. Louis area with a bang at the Alpine Shop Castlewood 8-Hour Adventure Race, after a hiatus in 2020 due to COVID. 97 teams started from Wyman Center in crisp temperatures with an orienteering leg through the gorgeous woods of Wyman and Greensfelder County Park. Then, they jumped on their bikes for a zippy road ride over to Route 66 State Park, where they loaded up the bikes into canoes for a 4-mile paddle down the Meramec River. Arriving at the Al Foster Trailhead, they re-assembled bikes and rolled into the Zombie/Rock Hollow trail system for some buff singletrack before tackling the challenging Alt Road climb back into Wyman Center. There, they laced up their shoes for a final orienteering trek on a new map in the woods of Wyman, even visiting a cave!
After the race, directors Emily & Erl announced their retirement from organizing the Castlewood 8-Hour AR due to relocating to Minnesota. Long time adventure racers Jeff and Carrie Sona will step into the race directing role next season in continued partnership with Alpine Shop. See you in 2022!
