2020 Castlewood 8-Hr Adventure Race
Race Update #3
11-Nov-20
Greetings, adventure racers!
This is not the Race Update we wanted to make today. We have been communicating with our land managers and our host community, and as a team, have decided to cancel the 2020 Castlewood 8-Hour Adventure Race.
The COVID-19 statistics are increasing both in St. Louis County, where the majority of our racers live, and in Franklin County/City of Pacific, which we were excited to explore in the 2020 race course. We feel that hosting a 300-person event, even with our COVID-19 Safety Plan including 100% outdoor spaces, masking policies, socially distant course design, and minimal pre- and post-race gathering opportunities, is unwise given our current situation. With the amount of work that planning an adventure race requires, we also aren’t willing to downsize the event. We hope you will understand our decision.
Where does that leave us? As adventure racers, we need to relocate and find a different route to our chosen checkpoint. We have three different options that each racer will need to consider for themselves, and we will collect your decisions in the Google Form linked here.
OPTION 1 – Defer your registration to the 2021 race on December 4th at your 2020 rate. Registration fees for 2021 will go up! [$100 early/$115 regular] You will NOT need to re-register for the 2021 race. Your registration will defer with the same team name and division, however, you will be able to transfer teams and divisions at a later time.
OPTION 2 – Receive an Alpine Shop gift card in the amount of your 2020 registration fee. You will need to re-register for the 2021 race if you would like to participate. The gift cards will be mailed to the address submitted during registration, and can be used in-store or online at alpineshop.com.
OPTION 3 – Receive a refund in the amount of your 2020 registration fee. You will need to re-register for the 2021 race if you would like to participate. The refund will be issued to the method of payment originally used during registration.
If no response is received by December 6, 2020, we will send you an Alpine Shop gift card and you will need to re-register for the 2021 event.
Please use this link to submit your race cancellation deferment/refund preference.
We are still planning to host our AR201 training session on November 21st, 2020 at Greensfelder County Park, as long as St. Louis County regulations allow it. We loved seeing your masked-up and socially-distanced selves last weekend, and one can never get too much orienteering practice.
Thank you in advance for your understanding. This decision has not been easy for us and we apologize for this cancellation. We appreciate your support of adventure racing and of the Alpine Shop community, and are looking forward to a time when we can safely gather in large numbers to celebrate adventure racing with a great course, great competition, and a great post-race beer!
Sincerely,
–Emily & Erl
And the entire Castlewood 8-Hr Adventure Race Team
