GREY SUMMIT, Mo. – Officially, spring will begin tomorrow, on Sunday, March 20. For the runners who participated in the 2022 The North Face Shaw Bloom Trail 10k/20k on Sat., March 19, spring may have looked like it was trying to hide out for awhile. In typical Midwestern fashion, temps were in the 80s on the Thursday earlier in the week, but a storm blew in on the day before the race and brought a cold front with it that will be kind enough to move out a few hours after the race. However, the Shaw Nature Reserve, part of the Missouri Botanical Gardens, rarely disappoints and this year’s race was no different.
Carl Wahlin (27) took command of the 20k race from the start, and opened up a lead of nearly 17 full minutes, finishing in 1:22:54.0. He was followed to the finish line by Jacob Galloway (01:39:14.3) and Allison Corbo, third overall, but first in the women’s field (01:41:52.3). Linda Wesolowski, second in the women’s field, finished in 01:48:00.9.
For the 10k field, Artie Romero – at age 65 – was the overall winner in a time of 50:29.6. Scott Hatch (50:48.6) and Jason Buck (Imperial, Mo. – 1:33.29.2) finished out the top three.
On the women’s side in the 10k, Jacqueline McCormick took home top honors in the race with a time of 52:44.5. Laurel Thornton (54:09.4) and Savannah Gagnon (54:11.7) took home second and third, respectively, just over two seconds apart.
