With five weeks of racing under your belt, now comes the big daddy: the Alpine Shop Short Track Dirt Crit Series Final Blowout XC Race – the longest name for a race in the history of cycling – and the final race of the mountain bike section of the Off-Road Racing League. This is your final chance to nail some points down before we head into trail running.

In this race, the timed number of laps is taken out and we head straight to the trails throughout Castlewood State Park on a race to see who can cover the ground the fastest.

Following this event, all participants in the entire Alpine Shop Short Track Dirt Crit Series are invited back to Lone Wolf Coffee Company for a post-race and post-series bash. (You can also consider it a pre-race and pre-series bash for the Trail runs which start up on August 19.)

This is not a traditional bike race. For the Alpine Shop Short Track Dirt Crit, the actual race length is determined by a total time. In the case of the A level race, the competitors race for 40 minutes plus one lap. The B and C races are 30 minutes and 15 minutes respectively, both with one lap added on to determine the winner. Prizes are awarded for top 3 in each category every night. The A race – featuring Category 1 riders (semi-pros and experts) – awards cash prizes both for this night and for the entire series. The B race – for Category 2 cyclists (sport and intermediate-level riders) – features different gear and clothing awards each night as does the C race for beginners and juniors.

Every level rider is welcome. Races feature both men and women. This is a great way to stay in shape while escaping the torrid heat of a typical summer afternoon.

All racers are welcome to partake in some post-race adult beverages (provided they’re 21 or older) and barbecue thanks to Lone Wolf Coffee Company and O’Fallon Brewery.

Help us make St. Louis one of the top outdoor recreation cities in the nation. You can start by joining us tonight.

Or, if you’re a beginner, we’ll have experienced riders ready to help you with tips and tricks for navigating the trail. Plan on at least one creek crossing in the test run, but the course will not be overly technical.

Just as we do during the actual series, practice times are set by the experience level you plan to race. Category A racers will start at 6 pm. Category B racers begin at 7 pm. And beginners and Category C racers will start at 7:30 pm. Racers are not required to stay on the course for an pre-determined amount of time.

This series is all about having fun. We encourage you to come out – even if you don’t plan on racing – and experience what the Short Track series is all about.

Meet in the horse turnaround before the Kiefer Creek bridge.
